Biography
Donovan George Schuster passed away Thursday, July 15, 2010 at the Toledo Hospital at the age of 86. He is preceded in death by his parents, Julius and Frieda Schuster of Elyria, OH. He is survived by his wife of 57 years Shirley (Howells) Schuster of Fremont, OH, his sister Gladys (Schuster) Harris of Elyria and sister-in-law Nancy (Howells) Olsen of Rapid City, SD. He is also survived by his children Richard (Gretl) of Dublin, OH, Robert (Jacquline) of McKinney, TX and Mark of Orange County, CA. He was the proud grandfather of Sarah (Michael) Kuhnell, Grant, Joshua, John Donovan, Anne and Tess Schuster, as well as great grandson August Donovan Kuhnell.
Don was a 1941 graduate of Elyria High School and the Ohio Northern University College of Engineering where he was a member of the Delta Sigma Phi fraternity. Don served as a member of the US Army Corp of Engineers and was a decorated veteran of World War II where he received the Bronze Star.
Upon graduation from college, Don began his engineering profession in Michigan and enjoyed a 25 year career at the Whirlpool Corporation in Marion and Clyde, Ohio where he retired in 1986 as the Manager and Director of Plant Engineering.
Don was a member of the Society of Professional Engineers, a 32nd Degree Mason, a member of the 20/30 Club of Marion, as well as an avid golfer.
Don was active in his communities and churches serving as a deacon and elder of the First Presbyterian Churches of Fremont and Marion, OH, as well as a volunteer with the American Red Cross. He led the efforts in the rebuilding of the Fremont church after the 1977 tornado and was also instrumental in the development of the Boy Scouts of America camp outside of Marion.
In celebration of his life, a public memorial service and luncheon will be held at the First Presbyterian Church of Fremont on Tuesday, July 20 at 11:00am.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the National Kidney Foundation Serving Ohio, or the First Presbyterian Church of Fremont. Online condolences may be left at www.kokm.net. Keller-Ochs-Koch-Mason was honored with the privilege of serving Don’s family.
